Facebook Messenger DOWN

Facebook Messenger is down this morning with thousands of users of the hugely popular chat app currently unable to access the service.

It seems the issues began around 2am this morning with users in Australia appearing hardest hit by the problems.

Down Detector, an independent website that tracks social mentions around certain topics to detect outages across the world, has also seen thousands of reports.

It's currently unclear what is causing the problems but some users have mentioned the app keeps crashing after updating to iOS 11.

One Apple smartphone owner reported, "When I open messenger it goes back to a black screen after a few seconds on my iPhone."

While another added, "Once I’ve opened the app it just automatically closes. I’ve tried updating the iOS on my phone, turning it on/off, and reinstalling messenger and it’s still happening."

Twitter is also full of users complaining of issues with the app with one tweet saying "What on earth happening to facebook messenger. It keeps crashing."

Another tweet revealed "Anyone else having their @facebook messenger app crashing instantly on iOS 11.0."

It was thought that reinstalling the app fixed the problems but Messenger users are saying this isn't working either.

One users who tried this fix said, "Uninstalling and reinstalling only worked for a few minutes. Back to the problem."

In a statement Facebook said it has now fixed problems with users told to make sure their app is up to date.

"On Friday September 22, 2017, some people reported having trouble accessing Messenger on iOS." The firm said.

"We quickly investigated, and we have released an update.

"If you continue to experience problems please look in the App Store for version 135.1 and uninstall/reinstall the app. We are very sorry for any inconvenience."

Apple released this blockbuster update on Tuesday with it bringing a swathe of features to iPhones and iPads.

These include updates to Maps, Siri and Apple Pay along with a new control centre and photo options.

It's not been a good week for Facebook with its WhatsApp service also hit by outages that caused thousands to lose access to the app.
